Preparing Grade 6 learners for the KPSEA assessment

School-based assessment in Grade 6 rewards steady practice more than last-minute cramming. Here is a simple routine that fits into a normal week.

Begin with the learning outcomes, not the past papers. Make sure each learner can explain the idea in their own words before you move to practice questions.

Use short weekly checks of ten to fifteen minutes. Mark them together in class so learners see their own mistakes and ask questions while the topic is fresh.

Keep a simple tracker with one row per learner and one column per topic. A tick, a half tick or a cross is enough to show who needs extra help.

In the last two weeks, mix topics in one revision paper so learners practise switching between them, as they will in the real assessment.

Frequently asked questions

How many practice papers are enough?

Two or three well-marked papers help more than ten that nobody reviews.

What if a learner is far behind?

Go back to the earlier grade outcome for that topic and rebuild from there in short sessions.
